This was in use until 1987 and changed only in 1988 to give way to the new and improved 180 HP 7.3-liter V8 diesel engine from International Harvester/Navistar.
Another change in the diesel engine wasn’t seen until 1993, when the 190 HP turbo version of the previous one was released with the then current models. Incremental changes were made throughout the succeeding years until there was the 250 HP 7.3-liter power stroke turbo-diesel V8 engine from 1999-2003. Soon, all of these improvements might be for naught since a time may come when the V8 loses its place inside the F-series pickup trucks. It’s one of the most logical turnouts of this whole scenario.
